Space Cowboy
Space Cowboy
By
Shannon Burton
That moment his brown eyes and her green eyes locked from across the room, he fell in love with her. He knew that he had to have her, one way or another. He stood up, taking one last drink of his scotch on the rocks and started to cross the room, his tall, lanky body moving easily through the crowd, his eyes never leaving the place that she was sitting, as if she were waiting for him. He finally reached her, and upon looking into her beautiful eyes, he knew that she would be trouble; but he did not care one bit, and he did not want to stop it. “Hi. I’m Spike.” It was short, simple and to the point…and she seemed to like it. He extended his hand, which she looked at with a small smirk on her pink, perfectly shaped lips. She took the extended hand and smiled, looking more deeply into his eyes. The moment their hands touched, Spike felt a bolt of electricity race through his entire body. “Hi. I’m Julia.” She smiled more openly now and shook his hand. Spike one again had that certainty that she would cause him heartache or death…or both, but he was hopeless to stop it. “Wanna get something to eat?”
Spike was a cowboy. Just your normal, average, everyday cowboy…with a few exceptions. He did not ride a horse with the name of Silver, or anything like that; he rode a ship, which he lovingly called, “Swordfish”. He did not live on a ranch or in a desert. Instead, he lived on another ship, called, ‘The Bebop” on a planet called Mars. He traveled throughout space and instead of herding cattle; he herded “bad guys”. Spike was what people might like to call a Space Cowboy. He did not have a lot of money, but the money he did have he usually used to eat or to fix up his ship so that he could keep his job. He job was that of a bounty hunter. His job was to find all the people that were wanted in the galaxy that he lived in and bring them in to the police for a cash reward. Spike was very good at his job and it kept his life very interesting. In fact, it probably could not have gotten more interesting, but then he met Julia.
Julia was a simple girl who led a simple life. That is until she got involved with a man from the Syndicate, the most powerful and the most dangerous group of men on the planet Mars. The man that she got involved was known as Vicious. His personality met his name. He was the most evil man that was on the Syndicate, and he was very proud of that fact, hence the name. Julia met his by chance one day, started to date him, pretended to love him, and then broke his heart. This all amused Julia but it did not amuse Vicious one bit. In fact, it made him so enraged that he turned the whole Syndicate against her. This caused her life to be turned upside and it caused her to be in constant fear for her life. She wanted to spend the rest of her life alone, dealing with her problems by herself, but then Spike walked into her life.
Spike snapped his fingers and watched as Julia almost physically pulled herself out of whatever she was thinking of. “So…are you up for it or what?” He smiled a crooked smile and Julia almost immediately fell in love. “Up for what again?” She looked into his eyes and felt the bolt of electricity that Spike had felt earlier course through her body. He continued to stare into her eyes and saw that they looked a bit troubled. He wondered what was wrong, but dared not ask. If he had known that she was in danger because of the Syndicate, he would have run away screaming. All he did, however, was smile his biggest smile and he looked at her hopefully. “Something to eat…” Julia shook her head, as if to clear the thoughts away, not wanting him to get involved in her life, but knowing she was not going to do anything to stop it. “Oh yeah that’s right…I would love to, as long as I get to pick the place.” She smiled back at him, and he once again noticed how beautiful she was, but also how troubled she looked. He ran a hand through his hair, and with his other he gently helped her out of her seat. “It will be fun, I promise.” Spike said, as he led her out of the room. She noticed how tall he was, at least six inches taller than she, and that made her love him even more. She followed him through the room, not taking her eyes off his lean, lanky body. She really hoped that it would be fun and that nothing bad would happen. Oh boy, she thought suddenly, what have I gotten myself into?
Spike groaned inwardly when he saw that she was leading him to, “The Black Cat”, the most expensive restaurant on Mars. I really hope I have the money for this, he thought glumly. He shot a glance at Julia and his heart skipped a beat. “You’re so beautiful.” He said, before realizing that he had spoken out loud. She looked at him, startled out of her own thoughts, saw that he was not being sarcastic or anything, and laughed a small laugh. “Thanks, you’re not so bad yourself.” This made Spike smile and that made Julia happy. She sighed. Why did you have to come into my life Spike? And why do I have a feeling that this is going to end in a bad way…Julia forgot her worries momentarily when Spike grabbed her hand and squeezed it as they walked into “The Black Cat”.
Once Inside, Spike was immediately alert, the air was filled with tension. Spike looked around slowly, hoping maybe that he could spot who was causing all this tension in the air. He was so absorbed in this that he did not notice Julia stiffen next to him. They were seated almost at once at a table, which seemed to be in the center of the room. Spike did not like this. As they sat, Spike noticed that most of the people were looking in their direction. The waiter came just then and Julia ordered a drink, her voice shaking badly. Spike also ordered a drink and grabbed Julia’s hand. “Everything is going to be fine. I won’t let anything happen to you.” Julia tried to smile, but it didn’t work. “I really hope so because…” Julia brought her voice down to a whisper, “that’s Vicious over there…and he's a dangerous man.” Spike just nodded slightly. He knew all about Vicious and the Syndicate, but for Julia he would do anything. They stared into each other’s eyes for a moment over the bouquet of red roses in the center of the table. Spike broke his eyes away, however, because out of the corner of one eye he had noticed a man walking towards their table. He looked at the man, thinking it was the waiter, but noticed that the man was pulling out a switchblade. He whispered to Julia, “Get under the table. Do not come out from under there for anything.”
Spike slowly got out of his chair and ran a hand through his hair. He saw Julia get under the table and started to walk towards the man. “Now…what is the point of that knife?” The man looked startled that Spike had spoken to him, but he quickly recovered and charged at Spike. Spike dimly heard Julia scream, but did not let that distract him. As soon as the man was close enough, Spike did a roundhouse kick and kicked the knife out of the man’s hand. Before the man could register what had happened, Spike brought up his other leg and kicked the man right between the eyes, knocking him out. Then, seeming to come from nowhere, Spike was surrounded by men. Spike however, being the excellent fighter that he was, was not worried one bit. He knew that he could take the men on, no problem. And that is just what he did.
Two guys came at Spike at one time, and he knocked the first guy out with one kick. The other guy got a lucky shot in and punched Spike in the stomach. It caused the air to whoosh out of him, but it did not faze him. Spike blocked the guys other punch and punched him in the throat. This made the guy gag, and while he was gagging, Spike threw another punch to his stomach, making him go down to his knees. Then all Spike had to do was kick him in the head to knock him out, and that is exactly what he did. After that, all the men started to come at Spike at the same time. Therefore, he just started to throw punches and kicks, seemingly at random to the untrained eye, but they were actually perfect, precise, and deadly. Spike had knocked out ten men by himself before he noticed that some of the men had started to bring out guns. He started to back slowly away. Oh man, he thought, what have I gotten myself into? He groaned inwardly. He continued to back away, but then realized it was too late for him. He ran a hand through his hair and smiled the smile that Julia loved so much. “Well…this has certainly been lots of fun tonight…” he leaned over, grabbed a rose off the table and brought it to his nose. “But I am afraid that I must…” he took one step back and his body was immediately filled with bullets. “…Run…” His body jerked convulsively as more than 60 bullets were rammed into his body. He dimly heard Julia scream. He smiled as he crumbled to the ground, still clutching the rose. “…Julia…” She crawled out from under the table and to Spike and grabbed him, putting his head in her lap. He brought his hand up and caressed her face as it grew fainter in his site. “I will love you fo…” he whispered as his eyes closed and his hand fell away as he slipped into darkness. The hand gripping the rose tightened for a second, and then fell limply to the floor. The rose rolled away quickly, as if afraid it would be next, and came to rest in a pool of blood. Julia held Spike as close as she could, her crying uncontrollable. “It’s all my fault. “She whispered into his hair, his body already growing cold. “It’s all my f…” Her words were abruptly cut off as bullets rattled her body. She gave a convulsive jerk and held Spike tighter for a moment before she fell forward with Spike still in her arms, one more tear running down her cheek.
