It's the year 2040, proceeding the catastrophic earthquake years earlier, Tokyo has been rebuilt. Now robots (called boomers) developed by the super corporation Genome are used to do all sorts of manual labour and have become useful 'members' of society. However, there is a flaw, boomers can go rogue (out of control), and in order to control them, the AD Police have been formed. Unfortunately, they are not up to the task, instead a vigilante team of girls in power suits, known as the knight sabres, has arisen, who dispatch the boomers with seemingly little difficulty. Bubblegum crisis: Tokyo 2040 is a 26 epsiode series about the knight sabres (Lina, Priss, Nene and Sylia) and their fight against the rogue boomers as well as their relationships. It is primarily action based, with a little bit of comedy to break up the seriousness of the threat of rogue boomers. The animation is excellent, since it was remade from the original bubblegum crisis series. Although the plot sounds a little thin (just girls in powersuits beating up robots) it thickens quite a bit, with some deep themes and plot twists. Overall it is a good series and comes highly recommended.
