Subtitled or dubbed, I've seen both and if I had to choose, it would be very difficult. The dubbed is the the one I saw first.

Fooly Cooly (or FLCL) is the most extreme ride through the land of anime L.S.D. in every way, shape and form. DO NOT make this first anime you see. Uncomprehendible!

Dubbed: The voice actors here did the most incredible job, down to the smallest detail (This is really quality stuff we're talking about here). I have never watched an anime series all the way through four times in a row until I ran across FLCL. Every time I watched I got something new out of it, (I can't stop raving!).

Subbed: Now I tell you the animation is great, with shots never before used by another series. The music (barring the end theme) is intence and that matches the general idea behind Fooly Cooly.
The Characters do develop even though this series is only 6 episodes long. I have often wondered whether or not they will expand on the show or not.
It seems as if this show took everything the creators had in them to pull this off, they may just not be able do it again. But, of all the anime I have seen, FLCL ranks in the top 5 with this reviewer.

Just to add one comment: If you really, really liked this anime like I did, I will suggest "Excel Saga"
