Posts: 11 Score: 23 Rank: 47 | Nausicaa was created by the master of anime himself, Hayao Miyzaki (Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, Kiki's Delivery Service, My Neighbor Tortoro, and others). It's a beautiful and touching film, one of his VERY best.
Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind takes place 1000 years after a global war called the "Seven Days of Fire" and most of the human race is wiped out. There are now forests that have poisonous spores and humans can only enter them with a breathing mask so the poison in the air won't destroy their lungs. Ohmu, giant crab-like insects live in these forests.
The heroine of the story, Nausicaa, a compassionate and kind princess of a valley called the "Valley of the Wind" as it uses wind to pump water. There is a legend there, that there is a hero who is a person wearing blue standing in a golden field and will find a bond between humanity and the earth and lead the human race to pure land.
Yet, for some reason, the ohmu are destroying empires and the Torumekian empire wants to revive a god soldier (one of the surving ones who fought in the Seven Days of Fire) they found underground, and use to kill the ohmu. Nausicaa, who is a nature-lover and loves the ohmu, wants to settle this without fighting, or else the Valley of the Wind will be doomed and so will humanity and nature.
Believe me, it's way better than how I explained it.
I was so happy to finally see Nausicaa. It was such a treat to watch, and it really moved me as well. Now I have a fondness for bugs (lol).
It was nice to see a heroine starring in the film (and a big suprise; considering how the creator is a man, and men usually have a male hero in their stories, then again, Miyazaki always has a girl star in his films, usually with a boy, but in Nausicaa's case, there isn't a major male role), and a very strong one too (I've noticed that way too many heroines are too naive or whiney). The other characters were likable as well.
For something made in the 80's, Nausicaa has gorgeous animation. The ohmu are drawn beautifully as well as many other creatures. The sounds worked very well too.
Is the music good? Way more than good. It's superb. It's so beautiful and haunting, and the action scene music has the coolest score you could ask for.
Is there an english dub? Yes, but one of the worst ever. The titled was changed to "Warriors of Wind" (this makes no sense. There are no "warriors of wind" in Nausicaa.), the original beautiful musical score was changed (and it was AWFUL!), the characters names were changed (Nausicaa is now Zandra, how lame and unoriginal is that?), a third of the film was cut (parts they felt were "slow-moving". Slow-moving my butt! Also, some parts were cut out because of Nausicaa's "bare bottom". Bare bottom my--well, butt! That is NOT a mini-skirt Nausicaa is wearing. It's her coat. She's wearing pants...it's so obvious...), and it was dubbed horribly with voice actors who had no clue what the original story was about. In short, avoid the dub at ALL COSTS.
For parents--if Nausicaa got an MPAA rating, it'd probably be PG. The violence isn't extreme, but yeah, it's in there. And there is some mild language. Other than that, it's pretty tame (but your kids will probably beg you for a fox-squirrel pet; like the one Nausicaa has ^^).
Nausicaa is very similar to Princess Mononoke, as it has the same type of envirometal (sp?) message in it. I prefer Nausicaa, mainly because it didn't drag out so long (though I wish Nausicaa could've been longer *sobsob*). Don't get me wrong though, Princess Mononoke is awesome too. Yes, Mononoke-fans, you will love Nausicaa.
Overall, I'd recommend this one to both otakus and non-otakus alike. Possibly my favorite Miyazaki movie next to Spirited Away.

Posts: 0 Score: 4 Rank: 274 | An excellent and moving piece of work by the master director Hayao Miyazaki. "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" was my second Miyazaki film, as well as my favorite to date.
Nausicaa is the beautiful, kind, and mysterious princess of "Kaze no Tani," or The Valley of the Wind. Its location in respect to the wind currents shelters it from the ever-growing "wastelands," which otherwise threaten to swallow it up. Disaster strikes (as it always seems to) in the form of an invading army of "Tourmekians," whose evil intentions are hidden from the people of the valley. The result is that Nausicaa becomes the final hope for preventing the destruction of her precious valley, and indeed, the stakes are much higher than that...
I won't give away too much, but what follows includes fast-paced action, Cute and cuddliness (provided by Nausicaa's pet fox-squirrel), inspiring heroism, plenty of dramatic, emotional moments, and an underlying, subtle love theme.
The film's musical score was composed by Joe Hisaishi, and it is absolutely wonderful. With such moving tracks as "Bird Person," and "Requiem," "Nausicaa's" soundtrack is unforgettable.
This is a must-see for fans of "Princess Mononoke." |
