Posts: 0 Score: 5 Rank: 201 | I absolutley adore this anime. So will you. Though the animation is nothing compared to InuYasha's gorgeous animation, you forget about it as soon as you watch the show.
Ranma Saotome, a 16-year-old boy, is introduced to the beautiful Tendo sisters...as a GIRL. One of the Tendo girls, Akane, wants to fight Ranma (for fun). They become fast friends...but in a short amount of time. Ranma takes a bath (in the GIRLS bathroom) and Akane comes in--only to see a boy taking a bath in the girl's bathroom. Akane is embarassed, scared, and above all, ANGRY. There's a pervert in the bathroom!
Ranma apologizes to Akane and her sisters for the accident (Akane didn't except his apology) he had. He and his father, Genma Saotome (who's good friends with the Tendo sisters' father), explain what's going on. Ranma and Genma went to the accursed springs to train. Genma can't read Chinese. Too bad, had he known Chinese, he probably would've looked at the warning about the accursed springs (all in Chinese!) and would've canceled the trip to the springs. If only...
Ranma and his father train on bamboo sticks (stuck in the springs) before their guide can warn them not to. Genma accidently falls into one of the springs, and comes out of it as a PANDA! Furious, Genma/panda knocks Ranma into another one of the springs. Ranma emerges out of the spring...as a GIRL! So here's the cursey ^_^: if Ranma is doused with cold water he becomes a girl, hot water reverses the effect until next time. Genma has the same kind of curse only he turns into a panda when he's doused with cold water.
Genma and Akane's dad decide that Ranma should get married to Akane. Ranma and Akane do NOT like this idea, but they don't really have a choice anymore. But since this is a ROMANTIC-comedy anime, there are occasionally a few sweet scenes between the two, but those scenes are vey short.
To tell you the truth, I've always hated romance (yes, I am a girl and girls don't always like romance thank you!) but this is exception. There are no sappy romantic scenes, and the main romance in it is the HUGE amount of people who fall in love with Akane and Ranma (in both his boy and girl forms). Ranma and Akane don't really fall in love with anyone.
There are absoulutey NO 100% plain serious scenes so for those of you who like dark animes, sorry! Often it'll seem like there's going to be a serious scene starting, but then it's interuppted by something.
The characters are very funny and lovable.
They include: Ryoga (my favorite of the Ranma 1/2 guys), a long-time rival of Ranma's and he too, has fallen into an accursed spring and carries the same curse as Ranma, only he changes into something different....a black-colored piglet (who is soooooo kawaii!)! One of the funniest things about Ryoga is his VERY poor sense of direction. The poor guy can't even find his way to the door!
Kuno, an upperclassman who is a pro when it comes to kendo. He also hates Ranma (as a boy) but when Ranma is a girl, he's OBSESSED with her! He's also in love with Akane, and becomes very dramatic when talking about both of them. It's REALLY funny.
Happosai, a tiny old man who's a 100% PERVERT! He steals girls' panties and bras and...disgusting. He chases women and hits on them as well. This may be what Miroku (from InuYasha) will be like 80 years older!
Shampoo, a Chinese woman (who can speak Japanese...a little.) who's MADLY in love with Ranma. The reasons are CONFIDENTAL! (kind of...)
Ukyo, a girl who's a pro at making oknomiyaki (japanese pizza) and is also in love with Ranma.
There are many other characters. Believe me, that isn't even HALF of the major characters I've highlited.
Ranma 1/2 is a bit like InuYasha (made by the same creator) in some ways. For one thing, the main characters Ranma and InuYasha. Ranma wants to be a normal boy, InuYasha wants to be a normal demon. Ranma wants to go to the spring of the drowned man to become a real guy, InuYasha wants the Shikon Jewel to become a full-blooded demon. Ranma is VERY into fighting, so is InuYasha.
See?
Though this is MUCH more light-hearted than Takahashi's InuYasha, it's just as enjoyable.
Even for people who love dark animes (like me) this is still a great anime! Feel-good, funny, cool. 10/10

Posts: 11 Score: 23 Rank: 49 | You know Rumiko Takahashi, the genius who made Inu-Yasha. Well, this is a story more light-hearted than Inu-Yasha, mainly, because it's a comedy. It's a romantic-comedy, mainly, because it contains loads of people falling in love with different people.
The main character, Ranma (who is voiced by Richard Cox) is a martial-arts-obsessed-guy, who is taken to the accursed springs for training with his dad. But they are unaware what kind of curses these springs have. While practicing fighting on bamboo poles, Ranma's dad accidently gets knocked into the "Spring of Drowned Panda" and when he got out of the water he's a panda! He furiously attacks his son, who gets knocked into the "Spring of Drowned Girl". When he gets out of the water, he's a--you guessed it--a girl (a well-built one, too.)
Here's how it works: if you've fallen into a certain accursed spring, you turn into that certain thing that was drowned in the spring you fell in when you're splashed with cold water. Hot water reverses the affect, until next time.
Ranma was going to be introduced to the Tendo girls so one of them could pick Ranma as a fiance (fiances are a popular thing that pops up in this anime). Only problem is, when Ranma is introduced to the girls, he himself, is currently in his girl form. Akane Tendo doesn't know Ranma's secret, and they become friends. Until... well, why explain? See the anime or read the manga. |

Posts: 0 Score: 12 Rank: 106 | | This is the FUNNIEST manga comic you could ask for. Mainly, it's gender-jokes, but they're pretty darn good. The characters are...unusual (especially Kuno) but they're EXTREMELY original. It tells the story of a 16-year-old boy, who accidently falls into "Spring of Drowned Girl" which has a scary side-effect. If he gets splashed with cold water, he will change into a girl, but when splashed with cold water, he'll be a boy again. The same sort of effect happened to his father, when he fell into "Spring of Drowned Panda" only he turns into a massive panda when splashed with cold water. The manga is unpredictable, and has some funny story-twists in it as well. There truly isn't a plot. Mainly, it's just the story of Ranma's misadventures with his dreadful (to a boy, at least) curse. But it's good, no, actually, it's FANTASTIC! Way to go, Ramiko Takahashi! |
