Mizutsuro Yaiba, who is missing a rib bone, is the father of all the Blade Children. He is the leader of an organization "Knights". An organization with only 1 leader will be shaken when the balance of power is affected. Hence, it is unlikely for a single person to control and destroy another large organization (which should be referring to the human population) but if it's an organization made of everyone with the same motive it is possible. Therefore, the "Blade Children Project" was initiated. Through laboratory methods (test-tube babies), Yaiba mass-produced the Blade Children. The Blade Children have one of their rib bones removed to mark them as Yaiba's children. To the people, Yaiba is a 'devil' because he wants the Blade Children and himself to replace them as the new race of humans. This is like an evolution of mankind. Upon realizing what Yaiba's plan was, the "Knights" split into 3 factions: The "Hunters" who wanted to get rid of Yaiba quickly because of the danger he posed; the "Watchers" who felt that since everything was still in an experimental stage, they should just keep an eye on Yaiba and the Blade Children; the "Saviors" who supported Yaiba as the devil and advocated the continuation of the project. However, the fact was that when Yaiba was in his teens, he was actually a kind person who doesn't hate people. The problem was that when he reached 20 years' old, he suddenly realized why he had abilities exceeding that of an average person and he 'switched', becoming a 'devil'. Similarly, the Blade Children will also 'switch' and carry out Yaiba's plan become his blood flows in them. They won't be who they are now as the same blood will erase their thoughts and will. This is the destiny of the Blade Children. To prevent the Blade Children from carrying out Yaiba's plan, the hunters started killing the Blade Children from when they were 5.

The wheel of fate has been turned when Kiyataka Narumi vanished. On that night, Kiyotaka's younger brother,Ayumu, was forever changed. Rio, the sweet clumsy young girl who hides a will so strong she would commit physical mutilitation just to prove a point. Ryoko, a star athlete, knows her future would be bright if it were not for the curse of the Blade Children. Quiet and deeply troubled, Sayoko becomes the target of the Hunters, the gruop who lives for nothing else but to see the Blade Children forever erased from existense.

Eyes Rutherford, a world famous concert pianist, appears to be the pillar of strength and support for the other Blade Children. But how long can he keep it up? and what shoul be made of the shocking arrival of the mysterious Kanone and his prediction that of a full scale assault on the Blade Children will soon begin?

With the help of Hiyono, the high octane reporter and the editor of the school newspapaer, Ayumu searches for clues that would lead him to the facts behind Kiyotaka's baffling disappearance all the while hiding his actions from his sister-in-law and detective, Madoka. The closer Ayumu draws near to the truth, the deadlier the Blade Children's twisted games become. Ayumu discovers corruption at the highest levels and learns the melody of logic always plays the notes of the truth.

Spiral is a mystery series, revolving around Ayumu Narumi as he tries to solve the mystery of the Blade Children, which all lead back to the disappearance of his elder brother, Kiyotaka. The Blade Children themselves have some kind of curse, and their lives are marked all throughout their lives by various people calling themselves "Hunters". The Blade Children test Ayumu, thinking that he will be their savior if he passes, not caring if he dies along with Hiyono, an enthusiastic girl who tags along while Ayumu runs into these tests...which are many times called games...though she does prove useful with her information network skills. Ayumu has little faith in himself, due to the overpowering shadow of his remarkable brother who became a world famous pianist in his teens, and then an outstanding detective, even though he has this insecurity, people notice his reasoning ability and think it almost "supernatural"

So the main questions are, will Ayumu reach a place his brother did? Does that mean the savior of the Blade Children...? And who are the Blade Children anyway? Why are they marked? All resulting in big headaches and large frowny lines for Ayumu.

...And how loud will fangirls sreech when Ayumu sleeps on Hiyono? Ohohoh. Don't look at me like that! Her shoulder, you pervert.
