Video Girl Ai is in my opinion, the greatest, and most original love story in the anime world. It is by Masakazu Katsura and also comes in manga volumes.

Moteuchi Yota is a lonely freshman in highschool, who is nicknamed "Dateless". He falls in love with his beautiful classmate, Hayakawa Moemi. When he goes to tell her how he feels, Moemi tells him that she is in love with Yota's best friend, who is the most popular and cute guy in the class.

Yota, as you could imagine, was extremely heart-broken. To forget his worries, he went to the Gokuraku video shop, which is magical. It rents videos to only the "pure of heart".

When Yota brought the video home, and put it in his VCR, he was very surprised. Amano Ai, an adorable girl comes out of his TV!

Ai is a Video Girl, who was sent from the Video World to cheer up Yota. Video Girls are supposed to be perfect - they cook well, behave, and act like maids to the person they are supposed to cheer up. Ai, being defective, cooks terribly, misbehaves, and has attitude! Ai also has feelings that Video Girls are forbidden to have. She gets jealous, lonely, and, worst of all for a Video Girl, she FALLS IN LOVE!

Yota falls in love with Ai as well, but he still is in love with Moemi. He has to decide whether he wants to be with his pretty classmate, or a cute Video Girl who may disappear!

Video Girl Ai follows the love life of Yota, the miserable boy, and Ai, the defective Video Girl. They face many problems, but they both love eachother the entire time.

Video Girl Ai is so original and successful that some series have copied it. But as Oscar Wilde once said, "Imitation is the highest form of flattery"
