Overall, Weiss Kreuz happily fits into the "bishounen quartet" category, with its list of "eye candy characters", sensual image poses and voice work reminiscent of boy bands.

Elaboration:
The story borrows elements from standard modern suspense thrillers and weaves them with traditional shoujo ingredients: giddy and tragic romance, "bishounen" characters who practice occasional fanservice (see Yoji in bed) that sends the giddy fangirls drooling, squealing and fantasizing. Though thankfully tied together by an unusual, somewhat dark, and maybe above-average semi-strong plot with amusing twists, I advise the classic suspense/action/story-hungry anime fan to pass. It's more of the guys looking all sexy while kicking some ass or angsting on some mediocre subject

The characters, though any avid fangirl would probably insist on their greatness, are not wholly impressive. They are provided with sad pasts, a basic ground for good character development, but any attempt to further flesh them out are abandoned. (The producers must say: "Forget depth. They look good, and that's what counts the most.") So basically, they hover between 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional. The extras range from pretty cool, to unexceptional, to downright infuriating (examples of that last one? That Sakura girl, of course.).

The music is mostly gloomy and brooding, successfully bringing out the faint occult tinge of the series, but flecked with random gentle, soothing pieces that teases the listener to buy the OST. The opening and ending songs are traditional (opening equals fast, upbeat and loud; ending equals slow, mellow and sentimental) but catchy, gifted with beautifully poetic lyrics and successfully delivered by the wonderful harmony of the seiyuu's voices.

The art is good, solid and colorful overall, although some episodes DO dip low (take ep. 6. The animation there sucks, too.). When compared with the manga, one does notice the subtle changes - the anime characters look older and sharper. Personally, I prefer the manga artwork, but that's my taste. Like any shoujo production, the additional fight scenes aren't well-choreographed.

The judgement:
Good series? Depends. If you're a fan of the genre it's in, you should definitely check it out. If not...well, you know what to do.

Advice:
Check out the fandom, too. Numerous slash (yes, LOTS of slash by malicious fangirls. There are some pretty good ones there, too.) and bad fics aside, you can find some really good stories that hightlight what Weiss Kreuz could have been: a quality action-packed thriller that sends those excitement nerves jumping around, shaking and shouting for more.
