Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 1036 | Yu-Gi-Oh! was a manga released in 1996 by the artist Kazuki Takahasi in the Shonen Magazine? Well, I'm not so good in the Manga, but I know my way around the Anime.
The main character is Yugi, (who will suffer during his long quest) he unlocks the Mellenium Puzzle, and then an older, (better looking and taller) version of him appears. Like every other anime show, the main character needs friends, so, his friends are Joey, Tristan (Joey and Tristan always used to pick on Yugi, but one day Joey and Tristan got into a fight and Yugi came to save them.) and then there is Tea. Yugi has a crush on her, but she has a crush on Yugi's taller version (Yami). His other friends are Bakura, (who is an English Accent 16 year old kid that can be very annoying) and Mai,(who always picks on Joey, though the 2 are really good friends.
In season 1, Yugi and his 3 friends go to duelist Kingdom to rescue Yugi's Grandpa's Soul (Did I forget him? Pegasus stole Yugi's Grandpa's soul, because he wants Yugi to enter his Tourney and steal Yugi's soul so he can revive his beloved wife.)
Yugi beats him, Yugi always wins. Well, Yami always wins. He only lost 1, or maybe 2 times. because he was forced to lose.
Season 2 was great, but I'm not going to explain it. I don't want to spoil it for you guys. |

Plot: 10! The Plots for the show are great and you really learn about the characters and Duel Monsters as well...believe me you can get some good quality dueling tips off of this show people!
Characters: 10! The characters are just amazing. They are so diverse and deep that you can really relate to them all particularly those with a detailed past like the Kaiba brothers or those with an ancient past like Yami Yugi!
Implements: 10! Many different things were implememented to the show such as awesome technology and many references to Ancient Egypt which were just stunning. Also the Millenium Items were pretty sweet too!
Music: 10! The music in this show is just great and easy to get hooked too. The Egyptian music blended with the modern techno-y music in the show's intro is just too cool!
Duels: 10! The duels were as always awesome! The monsters were really cool looking particularly the dragon-type monsters. They looked so real they could have walked right out of the tv and into the real world! And the cards were nice as well. Also the technology that brought to duels to life was cool. And the monster's attacks were just great!
Overall: Overall this show to me is one of the best anime series on the tv these days...its entertaining, funny and most of all a great show! |

Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 973 | YuGiOh is, in reality, a highly involved show. When the editors translated, dubbed and altered the show to suit thier own tastes, they lost a lot of the drama involved in the original.
Intellegent viewers (ie: teenage girls gazing over thier siblings shoulders at one of those 'stupid japanese cartoon thingys) tend to recognize the hints of darker undercurrents that the editors cut out (and subsequently search frantically all over the internet for subs to try and watch the GOOD stuff).
Personally, I'm a big fan of the series myself. I've never seen the entire first season, although I've read the manga, and I've missed a LOT of bits in between, however, many reliable online sources have allowed me to build a god picture of this fantastic anime.
The story starts out when a vertically-challenged boy with a huge budget for hair gel receives a puzzle from his grandfather, who is also vertically challenged and had to have a rather large budget for hair gel himself back in his day. He works almsot dya and night to solve the puzzle. When he does solve it, though, strange things begin happening. He blacks out, dosen't know what's going on for somtimes hours at a time. He discovers that this other personality, who he calls "mou hitori no boku" (my other self), has been taking over his body and playing shadow games, games where he maims, deludes and kills people in the name of justice to his 'aibou'. One example is when Yugi is set up to be the victim in a staged news story, the darker personality catches up with the director of the affair and plays a shadow game with him. The man winds up with cencored vision, and that is probably the mildest punishment. One person winds up with thier hand stabbed through and dies of scorpion bite, another winds up with thie rhand stabbed through and stuck in an alternate wolrd; Everyone else sees him trating leaves and twigs like they're gold. One man even dies in a blazing inferno.
That, of course, is the cut-out first season. The next season focuses primarily on a card game called Duel Monsters. This season, while important in it's own right, is mostly exposition for later chapters in the saga. In this part, we discover that Yugi's puzzle is part of a set of seven Sennen (or Millenium) items. Each has it's own dark power. The Sennen Puzzle has the ability to literally crush a perosn's mind, rendering them vegitative. The Sennen Ring has the ability to erase memories and imprison souls, as does the Sennen Eye. The Key allows a person to enter antoher's soul room. During the season, Yugi and his friends go to Duelist Kingdom, an island created by a man whose goal is to collect all seven Items to ressurect his dead wife. This, of course, is watered down in the dubed version. To lure him there, Pegasus J. Crawford (dubbed as Maxamillion Pegasus) captures Yugi's grandfather's soul. The only way to get him back is to play a card game based on an aincent Egyptian 'game'. Eventually, Yugi succeeds, winning his grandfather's soul back, and winning the 3 million dollar prize money for his best friend to use on his little sister's eye operation.
The next story arc is where things get a bit mroe itneresting. We discover here that 'Yami Yugi' is, in fact, an aincent Pharaoh. His arch-nemisis in the modern day gamin industry is Seto Kaiba, a teenaged billionaire who was undefeated until he got his butt handed to him on a plate earlier on in the series. Seto Kaiba's plan to take back his title includes a massive city-wide tournament, called Battle City. In amidst this turmoil, a blonde-haired boy bearing a golden sceptar comes into Domino aboard a yacht. This boy is Malik Ishtar, last in a very long line of Guardians of the Pharoahs Tomb. He holds a nasty grudge agianst the pharoah, as well as a totally mental other half (this one not actually imprisoned in an Item, but rather born of his own insanity). Naturally, the Pharaoh has to defeat him as well. The darker themes of the anime play very strongly in this part, delving a bit into the history. After some VERY close calls, a few of his friends getting trapped in the SHadow Realm, and a few insignificant megalomaniac-subordinates death's (also cut from the dub, of course), Yugi and Yami come out on top.
Now, there is another arc that was put in here. I never watched the dubbed version, and have heard very little to nothing about an original version, so I'll gloss it over by summarising it in a few words: Evil overlord, evel giant beast, take over the world, something aobut Atlantis, and Jou as good as admits he's mad for Mai.
Now, the final arc of the series is amazing. I can't even begin to summarize it, except to say this: the Pharaoh, Yugi and company are drawn into the Pharaoh's memory world, where the slightly off-kilter side-charachter Bakura really somes into the spotlight as one of the main antagonists. He has good reason to loathe the pharaoh, too. The pharaoh's father destroyed his entire villiage to create the Sennen Items. This leags to a massive, deadly game. Just when Bakura seems to dissolve into evil dust, he returns in a surprising twist that shocked even me (who's known for seeing twists coming a mile away).
The final chapter of the story, i won't say much for. It's sad, yes, for a person who had come to love the charachters as I had. It effectively wraps up the series, though, leaving few to no loose ends to ponder over, except maybe "So, after all this excitement in thier teenage years, how boring will the rest of thier lives be?"
All in all, one of the best series i've had the pleasure of following. | Contributions: Reviews: 1 |

Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 950 | | Long ago, when the pyramids were still young, Egyptian Kings played games of great and terrible power;games of faith, games of judgement, games of magic. But these shadow games twisted those with weak souls and black hearts. So the power was sealed away, imprisoned within the mystic millenium items. Until, thousands of years later a named yugi unlocks the power of the millenium puzzle. Now, the games have returned and with it a new champion infused with the energy of the millenium puzzle. But will yugi control the power or will the power control yugi? If you all just look deeper you'll see that yugioh is just a game but more. email me if you disagree, mala_gnsh@yahoo.com. ymkyugiohgirl. |

Posts: 0 Score: 2 Rank: 497 | | The show Yu-Gi-Oh is totally awesome! Anyone would get hooked to it if they watch the best episodes. But sometimes it's just plain boring, because all they do is spend hours and hours dueling. They should seriously show the real first season in the U.S., in which everything was not centered around a bunch of cards. Why don't they? The American debuted first season was really cool, with especially the best characters Mai and Joey, but the second season, dude, is filled with WAY too many Tea speeches. Who wants to listen to that many morale speeches anyways? But everyone should watch the third season because not only does it have real exciting battles, but also a lot of great action and stuff. Overall, the show should receive a rating of 8, which is pretty good, because of all the great action, drama, and the crowd pleasing techniques. | Contributions: Reviews: 2 |

Posts: 11 Score: 2 Rank: 476 | Yugi a young and experienced game master seeks to find his destiny and to find out the secret of his (Yami).
Shortly after Yugi completed the accent artifact called the Millennium Puzzle he gained the spirit of another. The spirit of the Millennium puzzle, The Pharaoh Atem or Yami. Now after 5,000 years after Atem saved the world they must do it again!
Through out the series they must play a game called Duel Monsters to defeat foes and get the Pharaoh's memory back so that they can save the world again.
This show has many strange characters such as Joey who loves food and his sister. Then there's Tristan who like Joey was a bully to Yugi and now is his friend. Tea she is such a sweetie she has a crush on the rather short and childish Yugi. Bakura a strange and mysterious student. No one really knows his true intent or if he will succeed with his evil mind controlling Yami, Touzouku? |

Posts: 0 Score: 2 Rank: 455 | | The third (technically SHOULD be fourth) season of YGO is ridiculous. The first two were really good, but this third one has absolutely no point to the overall plot of the other two (i.e. Yami must regain his full power again and stop other people from getting the Millenium Puzzle and his own power, which he has not unleashed yet). "They", the infamous they, decided to name this season "Enter the Shadow Realm." There is one slight problem. When did they enter the Shadow Realm? They are in VR (Virtual REality). THERE IS NO SHADOW REALM!!! This season, however, does give insight into Kaiba and Mokuba's past, however, and I am grateful to see the reasons that make Kaiba unhuman, and it's touching to see how much Mokuba, his last shred of humanity, means to him. | Contributions: Reviews: 2 |

Posts: 1 Score: 1 Rank: 721 | Yu-Gi-Oh! is one of the best anime shows on right now, mainly because it has the best plot. Others, such as Mucha Lucha, have a different plot for every episode, while Yu-Gi-Oh! has one big plot for the entire thing, with smaller plots in between. It helps the viewers stay focused and want to watch more.
However, the episodes tend to go on a bit longer than needed. In the duels, there is more talking than dueling, so a duel that should just take one episode normally takes two or three. There really is nothing wrong with that, except that the majority of people would rather see the ending than some pointless chatter. Yu-Gi-Oh! does have a rather interesting plot, so that is why many people watch it. Also, it has a card game to go along with it, so that keeps it popular as well. | Contributions: Reviews: 1 |

Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 547 | I can't stand it when people call Yuugiou a kid's show. It is in no way a kid's show. The dub* is really afwul, but the original version is quite excellent. Of course, the 1st series that was never aired in North America is much, much better, because the focus isn't solely on the card game. The second series, Duellist Kingdom, is not as good, and is actually quite lame in parts, because the focus is entirely on the card game and there isn't anywhere near as much dark undercurrents (or, in the case of some parts of Battle Ship, not-so-under undercurrents...). It should never have been dubbed by 4Kids. I mean, you can tell already that it's not going to be done very well, because it's 4KIDS, not 4TEENS or 4YOUNGADULTS. Once again, Yuugiou is not a kid's show. It has violence, swearing, and general pervertedness that is very common in Japanese...well, everything. I was surprised I didn't find a picture of a naked person printed on the plate upon which I was eating yakisoba today. Anyways, had it been dubbed by a different company (*cough*Toei*cough*...they actually did the 1st series in Japan, including the actual animation/drawing, unlike 4Kids, and the 1st series was excellently done, even if the animation isn't as fancy), had it NOT been aired on YTV and WBKids *stabstab*, and had it been aired on a program that's actually meant for animes/shows that aren't for children, like Adult Swim, it might've had a ghost of a chance as actually being a respectable dub. Of course, even if it had been dubbed by a different company, it isn't guaranteed that it would have had good voice actors. But, don't let the horrible dub deter you, as Yuugiou is a really excellent series, with a cast of excellent characters, great seiyuu, wonderful dark themes, and interesting pieces of Egyptian mythology tied in with the history of the card games. If you can find somewhere to get the original Japanese-language version, subs or not, I wouldn't pass up the chance.
*- When one says dub, dubbing is actually the process of recording a new soundtrack over the old one. A lot of the time, when people talk about dubbing, they think it's when they take things out/add things in/edit stuff in general, but that's the editing process. So, blame the editors, not the "dubbers", when things in your favourite anime dub are horribly, horribly wrong. There really is no such thing as the "dubbers", there is the dubbing company (such as 4Kids), and the voice actors. Of course, there are the people in charge of sound and such, but it's not their fault the voices are bad and the script is lame. | Contributions: Reviews: 1 |

Posts: 11 Score: 23 Rank: 47 | | Yu-Gi-Oh is symbol of how subtitled is usually better than dubbed. I found most of the voiceacting for the American version to be better than the Japanese version (when most of the time it's the other way around) but the dialogue was much better and realistic-sounding. Like the series which wasn't aired, it had occasional profanity, which was very mild, but it made the dialogue from certain individuals of the show sound more real. I wish they'd air the series that was supposed to come out. Yes, I am a teen, and I have a taste for intense violence and dark subject matter, and wish they didn't change so much. The storyline was so much better in the sub than the dub. In fact, this has happened to many great animes which were sadly dubbed into childish versions. I do watch the dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh as I find it entertaining and cool, but I prefer the subbed. |

Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 545 | It's to bad to say that the people in the US don't see the whole story. There are 3 series the only ones they've aired in the US are 2 and are currently airing 3 of course it can't be violent so they've had the whole story line revised taking the 1st season out because of language and violent senes that childeren shouldn't watch, ruining the action of the show for teenagers. We've all heard this many times "but the *brave* pharaoh locked the evil away"comepletely false.Originaly we all have the thought of Yami(Yugi's alter ego from the millenium puzzle)being a very kind and harmless person that has and always will be good BUT, actualy when he was a pharaoh he was evil and wanted to rule the world with the power of the millenium items so instead it should have been"an evil pharaoh was forced to lock away the shadow games that was threatning to destroy the world...."and doing so the pharaoh lost all his memories of being evil, leaving him with courage, hope, and confidence.Later when Yugi finds the millenium puzzle (in the first season)Yugi gets in situations with bullies, liars, and robbers and always the game king would come fourth challenging the people to *any type* of duel for EX:races, puzzles, and deadly fire & gun duels also.If they lost Yami would punish like cutting someones hand off(one of the more violent senes)or imprisoning them in a virtual world forever, then there is simply....... DEATH throwing them off a building you know something like that.Eventually Yugi gets Yami to lighten up which brings us to the 2nd season forming mostly around duel monsters and stuff which we are all mostly familiar with. Then there's the manga version (comics) that they probably will never realese in america but i've heard they might in 2004 ,again because its too violent.I know whats going to happen in the 3rd season but i won't tell unless they dub it like a few parts they already have.Overall this knowlege has made me understand this show isn't really for kids^^;I really recomend it for teens(11-14)and the dubbed for kids(6-10) because of the confusing card game rules.I hope this changes your thoughts about the show Yu-gi-oh.

Posts: Score: Rank: | I would have to say I find this anime a little too bland and formulaic for me. The action centres around Yugi who plays Duel Monsters, a popular card game, and when his Grandfather's soul is stolen by the wicked Pegasus (who incidentally is making a takeover bid on Kaiba Corp, the company that makes Duel Monsters) Yugi is forced into a rural island tournament to win back his Grandfather's soul! And how does he do this? By battling other players on holographic duelling arenas with Duel Monster Cards, and also with the aid of the ancient Millenium Puzzle, one of the 7 Millenium Items, that allows him to channel a powerful spirit to make him more confident. Of course, he meets enemies and friends, and progresses. After the first 40 episodes or so the action switches to the other holders of the Millenium Items and the history of them.
Oh dear. Self confidence is all very good, but this anime really seems delusional at times. They use a philosophy called, "The Heart Of The Cards" in which they believe that the cards will come through for them in a tight jam. Sorry, even in a child's anime I couldn't buy this. I haven't seen it subbed yet, but the incredible emphasis they put on cards seems a bit TOO heavy. The cards aren't even magical! Now if someone told Sakura to trust in HER cards, I'd be able to stop cringing - but this is just embarassing.
The anime is of an okay standard, its hardly beautiful, but some characters are just hideous. The plot moves along at a decent place, and I will admit that the intricacy of the card battles DOES show a well planned attitude. But, that's where it ends. There's nothing really intruiging or powerful about the plotline. In fact, the message instead of, "Believe in yourself and become strong!" appears as, "Become tall, get a deep voice and imposing stance, then you can become strong!" Yes, like the moral of Grease (the Movie) it seems Yugi can only make any advancement when he completely changes his appearance and lets the Spirit make decisions. In the duel where he is forced to duel without, of course he wins, but it is after much agonising and sorrow. Even then, the duel ends badly.
Would I reccomend Yugioh? To children maybe. But the monsters are too scary. To teenagers maybe. But the simple plot and suagary sweet message will put them off. I really don't think this anime is suitable for anyone! | |
