Posts: 11 Score: 23 Rank: 47 | | Yu-Gi-Oh is symbol of how subtitled is usually better than dubbed. I found most of the voiceacting for the American version to be better than the Japanese version (when most of the time it's the other way around) but the dialogue was much better and realistic-sounding. Like the series which wasn't aired, it had occasional profanity, which was very mild, but it made the dialogue from certain individuals of the show sound more real. I wish they'd air the series that was supposed to come out. Yes, I am a teen, and I have a taste for intense violence and dark subject matter, and wish they didn't change so much. The storyline was so much better in the sub than the dub. In fact, this has happened to many great animes which were sadly dubbed into childish versions. I do watch the dubbed Yu-Gi-Oh as I find it entertaining and cool, but I prefer the subbed. |

Posts: 0 Score: 1 Rank: 543 | It's to bad to say that the people in the US don't see the whole story. There are 3 series the only ones they've aired in the US are 2 and are currently airing 3 of course it can't be violent so they've had the whole story line revised taking the 1st season out because of language and violent senes that childeren shouldn't watch, ruining the action of the show for teenagers. We've all heard this many times "but the *brave* pharaoh locked the evil away"comepletely false.Originaly we all have the thought of Yami(Yugi's alter ego from the millenium puzzle)being a very kind and harmless person that has and always will be good BUT, actualy when he was a pharaoh he was evil and wanted to rule the world with the power of the millenium items so instead it should have been"an evil pharaoh was forced to lock away the shadow games that was threatning to destroy the world...."and doing so the pharaoh lost all his memories of being evil, leaving him with courage, hope, and confidence.Later when Yugi finds the millenium puzzle (in the first season)Yugi gets in situations with bullies, liars, and robbers and always the game king would come fourth challenging the people to *any type* of duel for EX:races, puzzles, and deadly fire & gun duels also.If they lost Yami would punish like cutting someones hand off(one of the more violent senes)or imprisoning them in a virtual world forever, then there is simply....... DEATH throwing them off a building you know something like that.Eventually Yugi gets Yami to lighten up which brings us to the 2nd season forming mostly around duel monsters and stuff which we are all mostly familiar with. Then there's the manga version (comics) that they probably will never realese in america but i've heard they might in 2004 ,again because its too violent.I know whats going to happen in the 3rd season but i won't tell unless they dub it like a few parts they already have.Overall this knowlege has made me understand this show isn't really for kids^^;I really recomend it for teens(11-14)and the dubbed for kids(6-10) because of the confusing card game rules.I hope this changes your thoughts about the show Yu-gi-oh.

Posts: Score: Rank: | I would have to say I find this anime a little too bland and formulaic for me. The action centres around Yugi who plays Duel Monsters, a popular card game, and when his Grandfather's soul is stolen by the wicked Pegasus (who incidentally is making a takeover bid on Kaiba Corp, the company that makes Duel Monsters) Yugi is forced into a rural island tournament to win back his Grandfather's soul! And how does he do this? By battling other players on holographic duelling arenas with Duel Monster Cards, and also with the aid of the ancient Millenium Puzzle, one of the 7 Millenium Items, that allows him to channel a powerful spirit to make him more confident. Of course, he meets enemies and friends, and progresses. After the first 40 episodes or so the action switches to the other holders of the Millenium Items and the history of them.
Oh dear. Self confidence is all very good, but this anime really seems delusional at times. They use a philosophy called, "The Heart Of The Cards" in which they believe that the cards will come through for them in a tight jam. Sorry, even in a child's anime I couldn't buy this. I haven't seen it subbed yet, but the incredible emphasis they put on cards seems a bit TOO heavy. The cards aren't even magical! Now if someone told Sakura to trust in HER cards, I'd be able to stop cringing - but this is just embarassing.
The anime is of an okay standard, its hardly beautiful, but some characters are just hideous. The plot moves along at a decent place, and I will admit that the intricacy of the card battles DOES show a well planned attitude. But, that's where it ends. There's nothing really intruiging or powerful about the plotline. In fact, the message instead of, "Believe in yourself and become strong!" appears as, "Become tall, get a deep voice and imposing stance, then you can become strong!" Yes, like the moral of Grease (the Movie) it seems Yugi can only make any advancement when he completely changes his appearance and lets the Spirit make decisions. In the duel where he is forced to duel without, of course he wins, but it is after much agonising and sorrow. Even then, the duel ends badly.
Would I reccomend Yugioh? To children maybe. But the monsters are too scary. To teenagers maybe. But the simple plot and suagary sweet message will put them off. I really don't think this anime is suitable for anyone! | |
