This series is similar to Neon Genesis Evangelion, in how serious and heavily dramatic it is and the giant, kick ass robots.
The main character is yanked out of his mundane city Tokyo and ends up piloting a robot called Raxaphon(don't worry, not shouting cheesy comands etc) to escape with his rescuer.
He leaves Tokyo and through doing so finds out he'd been lied to half his life and ...
