Anime is loaded with all kinds of families and mother figures who are both #mumgoals and #mummyissues. This Mother’s Day, let’s take a look at seven types of anime mothers that’ll make you hug your mum tighter!
The Tortured Mother
Mother Spider Demon | Demon Slayer
If you’re arachnophobic, her name alone is enough to make you itchy. She’s an arachnid puppeteer; possibly a puppet herself…
It’s in her demon nature to harm people, but she really makes a meal out of it – mercilessly torturing unfortunate souls who wander into her path.
It’s a real case of ‘you can’t choose your family’, because her character arc is as terrifying as it is tragic.
Who would’ve thought that this insidious demoness still possesses some threads of humanity beneath that red-dotted glare?
The Embarrassing Mother
Mamako Oosuki | Do You Love Your Mom and Her Two-Hit Multi-Target Attacks?
At some point, every kid thinks their mother is embarrassing. So why not start a new life inside a video game? That’s Mamako Oosuki’s plan… except not only does his mother, Mamako, get brought along into the game, but she’s stronger than him! HOW EMBARRASSING.
In Mamako’s defense, she’s infatuated with her son, and only wants the best for him… even if it means fighting (and winning) all of his battles.
In this mumcom role-playing adventure, will Masato ultimately level up, and will his relationship with Mamako ever grow stronger?
The Regal Mother
Queen Serenity | Sailor Moon
As fierce as she is regal, all hail Queen Serenity!
Though she’s a bit of an enigma, appearing mainly in flashbacks, our beloved Usagi wouldn’t be here without this mama of the Moon Kingdom, Queen Serenity, even if her conception is kind of furtive (goddesses work in mysterious ways…)
Commander of the Silver Crystal, Queen Serenity’s reign across the galaxy defies mortality itself. Using the surprisingly advanced technology of the Moon Kingdom, this mentoring mother appears as a digitised memory to her daughter, guiding her and the Sailor Scouts on their adventure.
Who else wants their mum to live forever? (I do!)
The Big MOTH-er
Mothra | Godzilla vs Mothra: Battle for Earth
Dust off your kaiju nostalgia and bow to the ancient, giant moth goddess! Protector of the earth, this good gal leaves her egg when threatened by a very dangerous creature… the human.
Alongside harmonising fairies, Mothra emerges from her chrysalis in clouds of golden glitter, gliding gently on the breeze… and we all just want to rub those fuzzy antennae.
IRL, a moth can lay anywhere between 40 to 1,000 eggs at a time. That’s a hell of a lot of potential mini Mothras to spread some protective wings over the world. In the Mothra-verse, we ultimately find out that her larvae are just as badass as she is – taking on Godzilla’s atomic ray just like…. moths to a flame.
The Selfless Mother
Carla Yeager | Attack on Titan
We’re introduced to her grisly fate almost immediately in Attack on Titan, but her legacy is lasting throughout the series in its visceral emotional impact on Eren and Mikasa.
A protective mother, Carla adopts Mikasa alongside her biological son, Eren, and holds her children’s safety as her utmost concern. Desperate to save Eren from his own reckless tendencies, she appoints the sensible Mikasa to protect him.
A mother’s sacrifice is not forgotten, especially in the eyes of her grieving children: the avenging Eren, and protective Mikasa.
The Deceptive Mother
Isabella / Mom | The Promised Neverland
If first impressions are anything to go by, Isabella is kind-hearted, affectionate, and seriously some kind of super mum: ensuring a mansion full of orphans are well-fed and comfortable at Gracefield House.
Don’t let that glimmer in her bright purple eyes fool you, though… Isabella’s breadcrumb trail of hugs and kisses leads to horror! She’ll just as easily switch from warm embraces to ratting out any kids who dare defy her happy home illusion…
The Matriarch Great Grandmother
Sakae Jinnouchi | Summer Wars
A grandparent’s relationship with their grandchild can be one of life’s most precious bonds.
When her great granddaughter, Natsuki Shinohara, brings Kenji Koiso along as her pretend boyfriend to Sakae’s birthday celebration, the old woman takes young Kenji aside and asks for him to look after Natsuki.
From our strong-willed matriarch to the young gamer Kazuma, the wider Jinnouchi family is a wholesome example of an eclectic family banding together to save the world from technological ruin.
Happy Mother’s Day!
